Australia would withdraw its troops from Iraq if it was asked to do so by the upcoming interim Iraqi government, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Australia would withdraw its troops from Iraq if it was asked to do so by the upcoming interim Iraqi government, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer said today.

But the Australian government does not expect that an interim Iraqi government, due to take power on June 30, would ask for Australian troops to leave, the spokesman said.
