Likud voters decide on Sharon withdrawal plan

Members of Israel’s ruling Likud Party began voting today on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s proposal to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.

Polls in recent days have indicated that Mr Sharon would lose the referendum. But the prime minister’s advisers said he is determined to press forward with the plan even if the party’s rank and file rejects it. The referendum is not legally binding.
