Iranian diplomat assassinated in Baghdad

An Iranian diplomat was assassinated in Baghdad on today, an Iraqi Foreign Minister spokesman said.

Gunmen opened fire on his car near the Iranian Embassy, the Arab television station al-Jazeera reported.

Earlier an Iranian envoy headed to the Iraqi holy city of Najaf on a mission to end the US stand-off with a radical Shiite cleric.
