Bomb alert at EU headquarters

The European Union head office’s main building was evacuated today after a “suspicious package” was found.

Staff at the Breydel building, which includes the office of European Commission President Romano Prodi, were evacuated into a park across the street.

Spokeswoman Beate Gminder said a “suspicious package” had been found, but she had no other details.

Prodi was targeted in December by two letter bombs sent to his home in Bologna, Italy. The devices ignited but no one was injured.

Italian investigators suspect a small group of anarchists was responsible for sending the devices to Prodi and about six other EU officials, all apparently mailed from Bologna on December 22.
