Chirac's party routed in local elections

France’s opposition is celebrating today after crushing the conservative government of President Jacques Chirac in local elections and setting the stage for a cabinet shake-up.

Yesterday’s victory march by the reborn Socialists has left Chirac standing alone with a losing team and an unpopular party midway through his five-year term.
