US soldier shot dead in ambush

Insurgents attacked a US patrol north of Baghdad and a gunbattle left a soldier and three rebels dead, the military said today.

The fighting was near the town of Taji, about 12 miles north of Baghdad, said Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, the US military’s deputy director of operations.
