An American soldier was killed when a roadside bomb exploded south of Baghdad, the US military said.

The explosion occurred near Mahmudiyah, 20 miles south of the Iraqi capital, the command said in a statement. No further details were released.

The latest death brought to 530 the number of US service members who have died since the beginning of the Iraq conflict last March.

Most of the deaths have occurred since President George W Bush declared an end to active combat on May 1.
