Blair faces Commons test

Tony Blair was today fighting to avoid a highly damaging Commons defeat over the British government’s flagship university funding reforms in a vote which could have major repercussions for his premiership.

Despite intense lobbying and cajoling, it was far from clear whether ministers will have won over enough Labour rebels to secure victory when the House divides at 7pm tonight on the introduction of “top up” tuition fees.
