UK blaze tragedy girl named
A schoolgirl who died with her grandmother in a New Year fire tragedy in a remote village in Scotland was today named by police.
Laura Allen, 13, from Bristol, was killed in the blaze at a cottage in Dumfries and Galloway.
The fire broke out in the early hours of New Year’s Day and police later confirmed one theory being studied by investigators was that candles set the house ablaze after a power cut.
The village, 1,531ft above sea level, is the highest in Scotland.
The fire claimed the life of Laura’s grandmother, Ellen Simpson, 60, who moved to the cottage from another house in the village after the death of her husband about four years ago.
Laura’s mother was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, and was later released after treatment.
