Bomb kills revellers in Indonesia
A bomb at a crowded night market killed nine New Year’s Eve revellers and injured 46 in Indonesia’s violent Aceh province, a doctor and other witnesses said today.
The bomb went off three hours before midnight at the market in eastern Aceh town of Pereulak, said Omar Rusdi, a doctor who treated the dead and injured.
Aceh has been battered by years of fighting between separatist guerrillas and government forces. It was not immediately clear whether the bomb attack was related to the conflict.
Police, the military and the rebels could not be immediately reached for comment.
The blast took appeared to have come from a bomb planted under a stage where musicians were playing, said Yusuf Puteh, a volunteer at a local human rights centre.
