Man held over girl's death

British police were today investigating the suspicious death of a 21-month-old girl.

West Midlands Police said a 43-year-old man had been arrested and was helping detectives with their inquiries into the tragedy on Christmas Eve.

Officers and paramedics were called to an address in West Bromwich at around 8pm, but discovered that the toddler had already been taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

It is understood the girl’s mother, an Asian woman in her 30s, took the child to hospital.

A police spokesman said officers were awaiting the results of a post mortem to establish the girl’s cause of death.
