Two US soldiers die in Iraq attacks

Two American soldiers died in separate attacks today near the Iraqi town of Baqouba, where two others were killed on Christmas Day earlier in a mortar attack.

One soldier died when his convoy was ambushed, said Capt. Jefferson Wolfe of the US army’s 4th Infantry Division.

Earlier, a soldier was killed as a crude bomb blew up as he was trying to defuse.

The convoy ambush began when an explosive device detonated as military vehicles passed by, and soldiers fired on their attackers, killing two, Wolfe said.

Two soldiers were injured, and one later died of his injuries.

On Thursday, two US soldiers died in a mortar attack on a military base near Baqouba, 30 miles north-east of Baghdad. Four other soldiers were injured.

Insurgents fired mortars that hit the base in the early evening, said Major Josslyn Aberle . Two wounded soldiers were evacuated for medical care but died of their injuries, she said.
