About 120 women in black head-to-toe robes staged a Christmas Day protest in front of the French Embassy in Bahrain, condemning President Jacques Chirac’s proposed ban on head scarves in schools.

Mr Chirac urged the French parliament last week to defend secularism by banning the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols in school. The move sparked protests in a number of Muslim countries.
