Christmas tree injures four in Prague

High winds knocked down a Christmas tree today in the Czech capital, injuring four people, police said.

The 30m tree erected in Prague’s medieval Old Town Square fell shortly after 11am (10am Irish time), police spokeswoman Eva Miklikova said.

At the time, the picturesque square was crowded by thousands of people shopping at a traditional Christmas market there.

Three adults and one child were injured, Miklikova said.

The four were taken to a hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries including broken arms, Miklikova said.

No more details were available.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident but high winds that swept through the country this morning were probably to blame, Miklikova said.
