A British father was jailed for five years today for killing his six-week-old son on New Year’s Day.
Vincent Jacob, 33, squeezed and suffocated baby Scott to death when he woke up wanting to be fed, the Old Bailey was told.
Jacob, an unemployed furniture polisher from Manor Park, east London, was cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm last month.
Judge Paul Focke said: “This is a very sad case.”
He said Jacob had on an earlier occasion lost his temper and squeezed the baby, causing some of his ribs to fracture.
On the day he died, Jacob had got up to bottle feed the baby in the early hours, and squeezed his chest so he could not breathe.
The judge said he accepted that some of the 16 rib fractures were caused by efforts to resuscitate the baby.
Stephen Solley QC, defending, said Jacob was slow in understanding but had undergone a vasectomy to ensure he did not father any other children.
His partner, Tina Brown who was cleared of child cruelty at the trial, was standing by him.
Jacob was given a three-year sentence for GBH to run concurrently with the manslaughter sentence.
