Powell warns on European defence plan

US Secretary of State Colin Powell warned today that European Union efforts to set up defence capabilities must not undermine the NATO alliance.

EU foreign ministers agreed last weekend to boost their ability to mount its own military operations, though its planning and command centre would be based at NATO’s military headquarters in Belgium.
