Carr's 'love at first sight' for Huntley

Maxine Carr said it may have been love at first sight when she met Ian Huntley, during police interviews hours after being arrested, the Old Bailey heard today.

Her interview was read to the jury as part of the trial of Ian Huntley who is accused of the murder of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman who disappeared from Soham on August 4 last year and whose bodies turned up 13 days later.

Huntley, 29, denies the girls’ murders and Carr denies two counts of assisting an offender and one of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Carr was arrested on August 17 and interviewed at Thorpe Wood police station in Peterborough by Detective Constable David York.

Here is a transcript of the parts of the interview where she discussed her relationship with Huntley.

Transcript:

Carr: “I met him on Saturday night in Hollywood’s nightclub, which, is not there anymore, but it was Hollywood’s nightclub, February in, I can’t remember the exact date, it was in the tens anyway.”

York: “Right.”

Carr: “Erm, and in that, that was in 1999.”

York: “1999, so February, so it’s just over, what, three and a half years then?”

Carr: “Yeah.”

York: “That you’ve known him? Okay. And you just met him in a nightclub?”

Carr: “Yeah.”

York: “That was that?”

Carr: “Moved in four weeks.”

York: “Moved in?”

Carr: “Yeah.”

York: “Four weeks? Oh. Love at first sight then?”

Carr: “ I know for me, maybe.”

York: “Alright, I see. Okay. So nobody introduced you then as such?”

Carr: “No.”

York: “You just sort of met. Were you out with your mates that particular night?”

Carr: “I was out with my friend and I just happened to sit down and his friend was sat next to me and my friend, and my friend then saw me sat next to a man and she came running and sat in between me, ’Who are you? Who are you?’ then Ian came back up, and he wasn’t too happy, he was ’Oh God, not women after us’, and, he’d not, he didn’t want to come out that night. He doesn’t like night clubs.”

York: “Okay. Just going back to you and Ian when you first met. What sort of things did you do together?”

Carr: “We’d go to Conningsby, Conningsby airbase, we do that a lot.”

York: “What’s that then? What’s there?”

Carr: “Airfield Tornadoes.”

(The officer then asks Carr whether she is into aeroplanes. She explains that Huntley was and taught her how to know one plane from another.)

Later in the interview, the officer asks about the pair moving into the house in Soham.

Carr discussed with her interviewer how the house was “a dump” when they first moved in but was then decorated and she added her own touches.

The interviewer returned for one final time to the pair’s relationship later.

Carr: “We don’t niggle about anything like that, the only niggles I get would be and is like when he’s sat on his backside, when you’re doing something.”

York: “Mmm.”

Carr: “On a Sunday. And you’re thinking ’Get in here and help me’.”
