Man held over text message rape

A man has been arrested over the rape of a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly attacked after meeting someone she contacted through text messages.

British police say the youngster, from Hindley, Wigan, Greater Manchester, UK, was attacked on Monday after meeting a man she had been introduced to by a friend - who met him on an internet chat service.

The girl told officers she was led through Wigan town centre before being attacked and raped in nearby Mesnes Park.

A 25-year-old Merseyside man has been arrested in connection with the attack, police said.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said he is being held on suspicion of rape and is due to be questioned by detectives in Wigan.
