Fourteen European tourists arrived in Germany today, ending a six month ordeal in the Sahara as hostages of a group linked to al-Qaida.

The nine Germans, four Swiss and one Dutchman had changed into tracksuits from the ragged robes and turbans they were wearing when they emerged from the desert yesterday. One gave TV cameras a thumbs-up.
