Talks continue as second deadline for mutineers passes

Senior Philippine Government officials were locked in negotiations with rebel army officers today as a second deadline for them to end a mutiny in downtown Manila passed.

The Government originally gave the mutineers until 5pm (10am Irish time) to give up and quit the apartment and shopping complex they had taken over in the capital’s financial district.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had threatened to use force against the mutineers after they demanded that her resignation.

But that deadline was extended by two hours after the rebels called for talks.

A second deadline, set for 7pm (Noon Irish time) then passed without incident as negotiations continued.

“I am hopeful,” said Cabinet Secretary Mike Defensor when asked if the talks would end the stand-off between the mutineers – who were surrounded by hundreds of troops loyal to the government.
