Rebel troops take over oil rich isles

Renegade troops toppled the government of Sao Tome and Principe, a potentially oil rich but impoverished island nation off west Africa, and installed a ruling junta today.

In a statement read on state radio, the mutinous soldiers said they intended to appoint new leaders who would rule the country during a transition period of unspecified length.
