Ten die in suicide attack on Pakistan mosque

Suicide bombers killed at least 10 worshippers in an attack on a Shiite Muslim mosque in south-western Pakistan today.

The powerful explosion shattered the mosque in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.

Ahmad Ali, who suffered shrapnel wounds in the attack, said he saw two suicide bombers enter the mosque.

“One of them was placing something that I guess was the bomb when he was seen by a security guard at the mosque. The guard killed him and the other one blew himself up,” Ali said.

Other witnesses said hand grenades were thrown into the mosque.

No one has taken responsibility for the explosion at the mosque where an estimated 2,000 worshippers had gathered for Friday prayers.

Pakistan is a majority Sunni Muslim country and attacks against minority Shiite Muslims have been frequent, usually blamed on radical Sunni Muslim groups.

Most of Pakistan’s 140 million people, the overwhelming majority of whom are Muslims, get along but militant groups from both sects have sprung up in recent years and they are violent.
