Train crash death toll reaches 22

The death toll from yesterday’s train crash in southern India rose to 22 today as rescue workers found more bodies in the mangled carriages.

The passenger train’s brakes failed as it arrived in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh state, and it toppled off a bridge and onto a marketplace.

At least 12 of the dead were crushed as the engine and two carriages fell on them.

Six South Central Railways officials were suspended pending an inquiry by the railroad safety commissioner, officials said.

Warangal is about 100 miles north of the state capital Hyderabad.
