Death toll rises to 18 in Indian train fall

Indian officials have said at least 18 people were been killed when a train fell off a bridge today.

The train fell onto parked three-wheel taxis waiting for passengers and part of a fish market under the tracks in southern India.

“The engine came down onto the road,” police superintendent Nalin Prabhat said in the town of Warangal.

He said seven people were confirmed killed, including some who were sitting in the taxis when the train fell on them. At least 15 people were injured.

More passengers were inside the carriages, which were hanging precariously off the bridge, and the total number of dead and injured would not be known until those carriages were cut open, he said.

The Golconda Express had been heading for Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state. The accident happened just a few yards from Warangal train station, 95 miles from Hyderabad.
