Police break up Nigerian protests

Police fired tear gas at protesters, some of them armed with machetes and nail-studded clubs, as demonstrations against fuel price rises gripped Nigerian cities today.

Shops and offices in the commercial capital Lagos were barricaded over fears about an outbreak of looting.
