German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder today announced a plan to bring forward tax cuts worth about €18bn in an attempt to inject new life into Europe’s largest economy.

“This government is improving the framework for more growth in Germany,” Schroeder said after the Cabinet agreed the step at a weekend retreat near Berlin.
