US announces formation of new Iraqi army

The US led civilian administration today announced the formation of a new Iraqi army and said recruitment would begin next week.

Walter Slocombe, senior adviser for security and defence in the Coalition Provisional Authority, said an initial division of 12,000 soldiers will be set up to be fully operational in one year.
