The Liberian government and rebels signed a ceasefire pact today to halt an escalating three year rebellion that has brought fighting close to the west African nation’s capital.

All sides had said in advance that the deal would include an agreement that President Charles Taylor, accused of war crimes in a UN indictment, resign within 30 days.
