Water polo fans run riot in Belgrade

Croatia’s foreign minister has cancelled a planned visit to Serbia and Montenegro after water polo fans went on the rampage in Belgrade.

Several thousand Serb fans attacked Croatia’s embassy after Serbia and Montenegro beat Croatia to win the European Water Polo Championship.

Windows were broken and the Croatian flag was replaced with a Serbian one.

There had already been trouble at the game in Slovenia, where Croatian fans smashed seats and beat up Serb delegates.

Foreign Minister Tonino Picula cannot visit “under such circumstances,” a spokeswoman said today in Zagreb.
