Annan calls for Middle East peacekeepers

Armed peacekeepers may be the only way to keep the Israelis and Palestinians apart long enough to start implementing a US-backed peace plan, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today.

He told Israel’s Haaretz newspaper that monitoring would only be sufficient “if the parties are able to break through the cycle of violence.”
