Hundreds of former Iraqi soldiers protested outside a US army compound in Baghdad today, demanding pay for all troops sacked when the military was disbanded.

The protest was largely peaceful, though there were a few scuffles between demonstrators and American soldiers guarding the entrance to the compound, which was one of Saddam Hussein’s many palaces.
