Eight people were killed and 25 injured when a Ferris wheel collapsed at a temple festival in southern India, police said today.

The victims were crushed when the wheel, which was set up by a temple near Tiruchchirapalli in Tamil Nadu state, crashed down after a heavy downpour and strong winds, they said.

Tiruchchirapalli is about 190 miles south-west of the state capital Madras.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Tiruchchirapalli.

Devotees visiting temples across India usually throng to the amusement parks that are often set up nearby during the temple festival season.
