Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard today defended the governor general, saying critics of the Queen’s embattled representative were forgetting his work with the country’s poor.

Peter Hollingworth, 68, took temporary leave on Sunday to fight a lawsuit accusing him of raping a woman in the 1960s.
