Pope returns to Biblical themes

Pope John Paul returned to strictly Biblical themes today, a day after an impassioned Easter call for peace in Iraq and an end to bloodshed around the world.

The pontiff appeared in the window of his study high above St Peter’s Square at noon to discuss the meaning of Christ’s resurrection.

“It is urgent that all men know and meet Christ, crucified and resurrected, and let themselves be conquered by him,” he told the crowd.

“To all those who welcome him, he opens their hearts to that true joy that makes human existence new, beautiful and rich with hope.”

The 82-year-old Pope – who suffers from the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and other ailments – has had an exhausting few days, from Holy Thursday to Good Friday to the Easter vigil to Easter Sunday.

During that celebration, he read his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” message, which addressed the world’s hot-spots, including Iraq.

The Pope appeared a little tired today, but waved and called out a hearty “Happy Easter! Happy Easter!” to the crowd after his address.
