Saddam's fighters stage final battle at Tikrit

American troops were fighting Iraqi forces in the centre of Saddam Hussein’s home town of Tikrit today, in what is expected to be the last battle of the war.

US tanks rolled into the main square of the northern Iraq city overnight as coalition warplanes bombarded fighters defending the birthplace of their ousted leader.
