Republican Guards captured as POWs

American troops fighting in central Iraq today captured several enemy fighters who said they were members of Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guard.

The US soldiers had been battling Iraqi forces in the town of Hindiyah.

The battles have centred around a key bridge across the Euphrates.
