Two US special forces soldiers killed in ambush

Two US special forces soldiers were killed today and another wounded in an ambush in southern Afghanistan, the US military said.

A statement from the headquarters of the US forces in Afghanistan said the soldiers were on a reconnaissance patrol in Helmand province when they were attacked.

An intelligence chief in southern Afghanistan said three Afghan soldiers also were wounded in the incident.

Dad Mohammed Khan, the intelligence chief of Helmand, said the soldiers had been inspecting the construction of a school and a hospital that the Americans were funding.

“Two US Special Forces were killed and one wounded when their four vehicle-mounted reconnaissance patrol was ambushed in the vicinity of Geresk,” the military said in a statement from an US-run military base north of the capital, Kabul.

It did not immediately identify the victims.

Geresk is about 70 miles west of the city of Kandahar.
