Forty per cent of water supplies to the stricken city of Basra have been restored but engineers are still struggling to fix the main water source, the Red Cross said today.

The southern Iraqi city was facing a humanitarian disaster after water and electricity supplies were cut off last Friday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned.
