The Japanese government said today it had refused a request by the United States to close the Iraqi embassy in Tokyo, saying it did not want to cut off diplomatic channels.

The decision was announced by senior vice foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who said the government officially informed Washington, according to a foreign ministry spokeswoman.
