Saudis make peace proposal to US and Iraq

Saudi Arabia has contacted the United States and Iraq with a peace proposal, the kingdom’s foreign minister said today.

Prince Saud al-Faisal said he was still waiting for a response.

“I don’t want to say we were rebuffed because we were not rebuffed, but nor were we given authorisation that they’re going with it,” he said in Riyadh.

The Saudi government has been quietly helping the US war effort, even while anti-war and anti-US sentiment simmers among its citizens. The kingdom fears a backlash from extremists.
