British and US troops invade Iraq

US and British ground troops invaded southern Iraq from Kuwait tonight in a gradual escalation of the war to drive Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from power.

While Royal Marines were advancing on Iraq’s Al Faw peninsula their US colleagues crossed the border to the west.
