Britain was today suggesting a compromise to give Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein more time to disarm, after a United Nations deadline vote was delayed amid mounting setbacks in UK and US efforts to win support for the resolution.

The United States had hoped to present the resolution to the council today, setting a March 17 date for Iraqi disarmament or war.
