Iran offers plan to end Iraq crisis

Iran today called for Iraqi elections supervised by the United Nations as part of a bid to avert war in the neighbouring country.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi also urged the Iraqi opposition to reconcile with President Saddam Hussein.

“We want a referendum to be held in Iraq and the Iraqi opposition to reconcile with the current regime in that country under the supervision of the United Nations,” he said in the Iranian capital Tehran.
