Captured al-Qaida leader Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was actively plotting attacks against commercial targets in the United States and the Arabian peninsula, US counter-terrorism officials said today.

Intelligence about Mohammed’s activities led in part to the orange terror alert – the second highest in the US – that lasted most of February, said the officials.
