Tatchell released by police after Mugabe protest

Controversial human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell was released by French police today after being questioned over his demonstration against Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe who is attending a summit in Paris.

Mr Tatchell and fellow campaigner Alan Wilkinson were detained at a Metro station as they arrived to ambush Mr Mugabe’s motorcade which was travelling to the foreign affairs ministry.

The men were questioned for about an hour before being released.

Mr Tatchell claimed that police said they were acting on orders of the French government, banning protests against the summit.

But he said: “Our intention is to continue hunting Mugabe and making sure his human rights abuses are the number one issue of this shameful summit.”
