US on terror alert after intelligence warning

The US national terror alert was raised from yellow to orange today following an intelligence warning of a “high risk” of a terrorist attack.

A senior administration official said the decision was based on an increase in intelligence pointing to a possible attack around the Muslim holy period of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the holy Saudi city of Mecca that starts tomorrow.
