A have-a-go-hero was shot and killed tonight after he and a friend chased two suspected robbers who had struck at a travel agents just moments earlier.

A have-a-go-hero was shot and killed tonight after he and a friend chased two suspected robbers who had struck at a travel agents just moments earlier.

West Yorkshire Police tonight confirmed the 36-year-old victim and his friend drove after the suspects’ car before a confrontation in which he was blasted in the chest.

The tea-time shooting happened near the junction of Thornton Road and Jowett Street, in Bradford, about a mile from where the travel agency, in Lumb Lane, had been robbed just minutes earlier.

As the fatally injured man lay dying in the road, the robbers fled clutching their haul which police said was a "substantial quantity of cash."

The injured man, whose details have not been released by police, died in Bradford’s Royal Infirmary shortly after the shooting.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said tonight: "It’s believed the man and his friend, in a silver BMW, followed two suspects who got into a white Nissan Sunny believed to have been involved in a robbery at a travel agents on Lumb Lane about 5.17pm.

"The car was followed a short distance before there was a confrontation on Jowett Street in which the man was shot in the chest.

"He was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where sadly he died from his injuries.

"The offenders did escape with a substantial quantity of cash."
