Eleven people, including nine members of one family, have been found dead as emergency workers picked through the devastation left by the most powerful cyclone to hit northern Fiji in more than a decade.

Winds gusting up to 125mph at the centre of Cyclone Ami tore down houses, ripped up plantations, drove huge waves on to low-lying islands and unleashed torrential rainstorms early this week.
