Five people have been killed and six injured in eastern Afghanistan when a rocket-propelled grenade was fired into the air during a wedding party.

The grenade landed near the revellers before exploding, said Abdul Matin Hasankhiel, a senior military commander in the area.

Machine guns are often fired in the air to celebrate marriages in Afghanistan - but local tradition does not usually include firing heavier weapons like grenades or rockets.

The incident in Gardez province, 80 miles south of the capital Kabul, happened on Friday but was not reported until today.
