Human rights activists have said that the Australian government’s policy of holding asylum seekers in prison-like detention centres was to blame for a recent spate of arson incidents at the camps.

Their comments came a day after blazes broke out at two of the seven detention centres where some 1,200 illegal immigrants, most from the Middle East and South Asia, are being held while applications for asylum are considered.
